Eco-Schools Celebration

12 lucky children from Frome Valley were selected to take part in the 'Eco-Schools Celebration Day' at Cerne Abbas Village Hall.  It was a fun filled day that gave us all the chance to celebrate our eco-schools acheivements, make new friends, learn something new and to inspire our eco-schools work for next term!

We took part in 3 planned activities.  The first activity was 'Talking Rubbish' in which we looked at materials that could and could not be recycled, reused or reduced.  We also looked at how other countries around the world recycle materials in different ways, such as making footballs out of plastic bags and string in Kenya.
Our second activity was working with 2 rangers from Thornacombe Woods and learning all about Owls.  We listened to a lovely story about owls and then rotated between two activities.  The first was thinking about what physical attributes owls have to made them such efficient predators and thinking about their position in the food chain.  The next activity was disecting owl pellets and matching up all the little bones and skulls we found in them to idenifiction posters so we could see what the owl had eaten.
At lunch time we had to see if we had all brought a 'waste free lunch'.  We had to collect up all of our waste and see what could be recycled ( 1 point per piece) or could not be recycled (2 points per piece). Out of all of the schools there on the day we came 3rd! Which was brilliant!
Lastly, we worked with the marvellous Martin to write our own 'Eco-anthem!'.  We spoke about the key themes when talking about Eco-schools and compiled together some amazing eco-phrases that the children came up to create a song.  Our phrase was about transportation and the children came up with: Use more bicycles and more recyclables! Fantastic!
