Go-Givers

What is it?

Go-Givers is a national project that the Year 3 children have been working on over the summer term. It aims to strength links with the community by working on a project that will tackle and hopefully improve an issue or area of need in the local community. Here are some issues we considered tackling...

Year 3’s Project

Year 3 decided to tackle the issue of cycling safety. To pin-point which issue in particular regarding cycling safety, the children wrote to and visited people of all ages in the community including:

  •          Elderly at the Community Room
  •          Adults at the Co-operative supermarket
  •          Young people at Crossways Youth Club
  •          Children at Frome Valley First School.

By an overwhelming majority, helmet wearing was thought to be the most common area of need.

So, the children set to work on a plan to try and improve the number of people wearing helmets when cycling or scooting in the community. They decided to target the youngest people in the community as these were the future generation of helmet wearers.

Year 3 visited Frome Valley Pre-School and Crossways Playground to tell the children of the importance of helmet wearing. This giving a short presentation, sharing some of their personal experiences of accidents they had had on bikes and giving the young children a chance to try on their helmets. Both events were well enjoyed by all.

Project achievements

This project has allowed the Year 3 children to gain a sense of ownership on an important project and see the difference they can make to other people’s lives. They have learnt important letter writing skills and developed their confidence and ability to talk to unfamiliar adults and children.

Project Scrapbook

Half of the class helped to put together a scrapbook depicting all they had done during the project. This has been submitted to the Go-Givers team and may win a prize!

Project Celebration

The other half of the class went to Bournemouth Dance Pavilion along with 6 other schools who took part in the project. Unfortunately, the Pavilion could not house all children from every class. Each school, including ours, presented their project and was presented with a framed certificate to take back to school. They also heard about projects that other school have carried out in Birmingham and Leeds. A great day out!

Here is the Year 3 rap that was part of their presentation:
