Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day 2018

At Frome Valley, we dedicate a whole day to staying safe online every year.  This year, the overall focus of safer internet day was; ''Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you'.  The day started with a whole school assembly which was about staying safe online when playing familiar games or doing searches for pictures online.  One of the most important things we learnt that was whenever anything happens that worries you or is not what you expect, you must tell an adult!
Reception

In Reception class, we started by reading a story about 'Smartie the Penguin' who gets a new tablet for his birthday and starts playing games online.  He comes into a spot of bother when things start popping up them he is not expecting.  Mummy penguin taught us a song to help us decide what action to take if this ever happens to us.

"Before you tap and click, you need to stop and think! And tell someone!"

We then learnt about keeping our information safe and staying private online.
We made a 'compliment web' in the classroom. We have to pass the string to a friend and say something nice about them. At the end, we could see that we were all connected, just like when we are on the internet. We then thought about how important it was to be saying nice things, rather than horrible things. If we it was horrible things that were being said, we agreed that we wouldn't want to be connected in the web!
Year 1

Year 1 began Internet Safety Day by thinking about what they liked to do on the internet and how what they do on the internet creates a 'digital footprint'.  We discussed positive and negative things about the internet and also focused on making positive comments about others.

We then read the story of 'Smartie the Penguin' and what to do if you see something you are not sure about online. The story helped us with a rhyme -
'Before you click,click,click....you need to think,think,think...and tell someone'.

We discussed shutting the lid/turning off the device and telling an adult if we see something we are not sure about. We finished off the day by making our own Smartie the Penguin masks.

Year 2

We learnt about how to make good comments and chat responsibly on line.  Children created a simple blog and took part in a discussion on our class page.  We learnt about our digital footprint.

Year 3

We began the day looking at emojis and discussed the various ways they could be interpreted! We looked at a variety of messages that might be received using social media and colour coded them according to our feelings; many got mixed reactions depending on how we read the message.

In the afternoon, we developed our digital literacy skills further using resources from the Common Sense website. We learnt the Dos and Don'ts of passwords and how best to write an email.
Year 4

Year 4 started the day by considering all the ways that we can communicate online and how we share information with others. We discussed the many positives of the Internet and connecting with other people through the digital world. We also reminded ourselves about how to stay safe online and what to do if you see or hear something that makes you feel uncomfortable.
During the morning, the children considered their Digital Footprint. They created a footprint and included all the different ways that they use the Internet, detailing their gadgets and the apps used.
During the afternoon, the children considered how they digital communication can be interpreted. This focused on the use of emojis to say how we feel and what we think. The children created E-Safety messages from Emojis.
We also focused on creating a digital code of conduct using the letters of the alphabet.
